In this day in age when all you ever hear on TV is that the planet is heating up, the polar bears are going extinct, and that we should watch our carbon foot print, I find it hard to believe that some companies seem to care less.
I ordered a package from the US the other day and it was shipped via FedEx.  The package in question was sent out of Medford, Oregon and was coming to Kelowna, BC Canada. As you may or may not know, Kelowna is north and slightly east of Medford Oregon (see map 1), so the obvious route to take , would  be north and to the east of Medford and come right to Kelowna, but that is not what FedEx did.
In stead Fedex followed the following route.Â
Medford, OR -> Memphis, TN -> Vancouver BC -> Richmond BC -> Vancouver BC -> Kelowna BC.Â
I sure hope that they bought some carbon credits to offset that delivery.

While this does seem unnecessary…you have to understand how a company like FedEx operates. Obviously, everytime they get a package, they cannot put it on a truck and take it straight to the destination. It is more efficient for them to send packages to a central place, sort them by where they are going, and then take all package destined for one area (such as Kelowna) at the same time. It allows them to move packages more efficiently and quickly. While it seems irresponsible, it would be much more irresponsible to have a million trucks each driving hundreds of miles to deliver a single package.
Thanks Christine although I do understand why they do this, wouldn’t it make more sense to have more than one sort facility? It would accomplish two things first it would reduce the carbon emissions of criss-crossing the country and second it would create more jobs. Both of which would be a good thing in this day in age.
