03/10/2009Descriptive, dynamic titles! A dynamic name for every page on your blog.
Now this may sound difficult but it’s really easy.
Explanation
When Google, Yahoo or other search engines return results, they provide the title and a short description of the site they are linking to. These are easy to see becuase, they are Bold and in Blue (see below).
The title comes from the actual <title> tag for your post. In an ideal world the title on each page would contain both to title of the post and the name of the site.
There are two way to make this happen:
- Change your title manually with every post (this could take a long time if you have multiple pages on your blog).
- Have you blog change them for you!
#2 is the obvious choice. So how do we make this happen?
Execution
If you use WordPress, this is extremely easy to do.
All you have to do is add one line of PHP between the <title> tags in your theme’s header.php file.
<title>
<?php
   if (is_single() || is_page() || is_archive()) {
       wp_title('',true);
   } else {
       bloginfo('description');
   }
?>
</title>
That’s It!
When you check your site you will notice that the home page will be the name and tagline of your blog (these can be set in your settings section of your WordPress administration panel).
On the other pages of your title will be based on the title of your post and will include the name of your site.
03/1/2009Last I talked about the idea behind links being a kind of coolness factor and about the number of links you might need to get to the top. This week we will talk about where and how to get the links needed to climb the Google ladder.
Types of Links
There are 4 types of links out there:
- One-Way links- these are links that point to your site without the need to have a reciprocal link.
- Reciprocal links- These are links that require you to place a link on your site in exchange for a link on their site. (Try to avoid these links if possible)
- Blog Links (see below)
- Forum Signatures- These links come from messaging on forums and having a link in your signature.
Links Where Are You?
There are a few different was yo can get links to your site.
- The first and easiest is just to start leaving comments on other sites that have blogs. This is a great way to get links to your site, but for the most part these links will come with a minimal page rank or none at all. Nonetheless they are important and every link, no matter how small, counts. This, along with forum links, is the fastest way of building links.
- The next way to get sites to link to you, is by asking the owner of the site to add a link on their website. The easiest way to get these kind of links is to have friends, that have blogs or maintain a website, add a link on their site. These are permanent links and they hold more value.
- The third way is by leaving comments in a forum and having a link in your signature. As with blog link the more relationship between your site and the forum link the better in the eyes of a search engine.
- The final way of getting permanent links to your site, is by adding your sit information into web directories. Web directories are essentially small search engines. There are about 300 directories that are good and have a good page rank. The problem with directories is that they can take up to 6-8 weeks before your link is added, but when they are added it is a permanent link.
If you want to add your name to 300 directories you can do so by heading over to ADDURL.nu. Or for a small fee I will do the tedious work of adding your info to these sites for you.
Directories TO Be In!
It is generally a good thing to be listed in directories. And there are 2 that you absolutely should be included in and 1 that if you can afford it should be listed in.
- DMOZ- The Open Directory Project is the largest, most comprehensive human-edited directory of the Web. It is constructed and maintained by a vast, global community of volunteer editors.
- Yahoo Directory ($299/year)-Â Yahoo! Directory Submit is part of a suite of services Yahoo! created to serve the needs of businesses like yours. Yahoo! Directory Submit provides expedited review of web sites you submit for possible inclusion in the Yahoo! Directory. We will respond to your request within 7 business days.
- Zoom Info-Â ZoomInfo is the premier business information search engine, with profiles on more than 45 million people and 5 million companies. ZoomInfo delivers fresh and organized information on industries, companies, people, products, services and jobs.
It is generally held that you should get listed in these directories. Zoominfo and DMOZ are free and will take a long time to get listed, but they are important so get listed. If you have $299US per year to spend then get listed in the Yahoo directory.
